Thurmond Fowler es un sheriff al que se le asigna el caso de un asesinato en un pueblo de Mississippi. El principal sospechoso es Russ, un vecino despreciado en el pueblo por haber hecho perder a mucha gente su dinero en inversiones. Sin embargo, cuando se descubre que el asesino en realidad entró en una casa equivocada, se empieza a desvelar una trama oculta.
